Getting Outdoors for Exercise

Some people actually develop asthma, tuberculosis, and other lung diseases because of their overdevotion to their daily work and their failure to take proper daily exercise in the sunshine and fresh air. These people often hover over a desk all day—and cramp their lungs, not breathing well, and as a result develop all sorts of illnesses and diseases.

They would probably protest they are too tired and haven’t got enough energy to get outdoors for a daily walk. But that’s why they are tired. It will probably be hard for them at first because they are not used to it, but I can almost guarantee that exercise is the cure—exercise in the fresh air and sunshine. It’s been proven time and time again.

A lot of times we are very tired and don’t feel like going, but we know we have to. Whether we want to or not, we go out and walk, rain or shine. Doctors say if you even get 15 minutes of vigorous exercise every day, it will probably keep you in fair health.

There have been quite a few well-known tuberculars in history—I think Robert Louis Stevenson was one—some of whom went to the mountains or the lakes or the woods or the South Sea Islands to die, after they were given up by the doctors as hopeless cases. I remember seeing a famous movie about a young English nobleman given up to die as a tubercular. Since he had always wanted to see the world and especially Canada, he decided that would be a good place to die, camping and fishing in the woods and the lakes and streams of Canada; in other words, on a permanent vacation to die.

Instead of that, he fully recovered and became of robust health from all that fresh air and exercise and sunshine and camping and fishing! That’s what he needed: to get away from the tension and worry and strain of business and all its complications and indoor confinement. He went to Canada intending to die, and instead got to enjoying the rigorous exercise of camping and fishing and hunting and hiking so much that it brought him back to health. Camping can be wonderfully healthful.

You have got to set aside a certain time every day to get outdoors, an hour or two of fresh air and vigorous exercise, and sunshine if possible. You’ve just got to do it, that’s all, whether you like it or not, whether you think you have time for it or not, and no matter how much work you’ve got. There’s another thing that’s important to your health: water and liquids really keep your circulation going, washing out the poisons, purifying your system, and keeping you in good shape.

Nearly all types of pulmonary diseases, lung troubles, asthma, tuberculosis, and others, are aggravated, if not caused, by inactivity, lack of exercise, lack of fresh air, lack of sunshine, and being cooped up inside all day because you think you can’t do it and then can’t get out of it. Then you’re too sick and too weak; no, you can’t take an hour’s walk, an hour’s exercise, because you haven’t got the strength.

Of course, you will never have the strength if you don’t go out and do it. I have nearly killed myself walking up and down our nearby hill sometimes, but I knew I had to do it to keep up my strength and my heart. After you have done it for a certain period of time, then it becomes easier because you’ve built up your strength and your muscles, and your whole body feels better. You’re made to move.

Your body was built for activity; it wasn’t built just to sit or lie around all day. It was built for vigorous activity, and some of the people who live the longest are those in a little mountain valley somewhere out in Asia or Russia, who live to be over a hundred. They live regular lives, operate by regular schedules, eat normal, healthy, natural food, and work hard all day. Most of them, clear up to and over 100, still work hard all day long at their usual jobs, plowing fields, sowing and reaping, or making things, working hard all day long, with regular vigorous physical exercise—maybe not too strenuous—fresh air, sunshine, good wholesome natural food, regularity and freedom from tension and excitement. They live about the same every day and there’s not much excitement or tension.

Not getting outdoors every day for some vigorous exercise in the fresh air and sunshine, or rain shine or whatever, is abusing your body. Even when it’s cloudy, you still get the benefit of the sun’s rays through the clouds. Plants in Ireland grow beautifully; the Emerald Isle, it’s called, green as it can be, and the cattle grow like mad because they are out in the nice fresh air, exercising and getting the kind of food they need and getting lots of fresh air, even if they never get any sunshine.

You just can’t abuse your body and not get any exercise or any fresh air or any vigorous regular activity every day, to exercise your muscles and heart and circulate your blood and flush out your lungs and your bloodstream and keep all your bodily functions in repair. If you abuse your body and don’t care for it properly every day, you’re soon going to feel it; you’re going to suffer for it.

The recipe is the same as it always was: good rest, good exercise, good food, and good living. If you violate these rules, then you’re likely to have bad health and bad living and quick dying.

It’s like Paderewski, the world’s most famous pianist, said about his playing: that if he missed practice one day, he knew it. If he missed practicing the piano two days, his friends knew it. If he missed three day’s practice, the whole world knew it.

You have to realize that you are not your own; you’re bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:19–20), and you can’t do as you please. You just can’t sit around doing the work you love to do all day long and all night and all week long, and never get out and take care of your body and get any exercise or fresh air.

Whether you like it or not, whether it pleases you or not, you don’t belong to yourselves. You belong to the Lord and you’ve got to get outdoors and exercise. If you are going to preserve your health and your bodies and your lives, you’ve got to get an hour or two of good, strong physical exercise every day in the fresh air, whether it’s sunshine or rain shine!

Nobody ever really feels like it after a long day’s sedentary drudgery over a computer or a desk or a printing press or in a photo lab. You’re tired and you don’t necessarily feel like getting out and getting some vigorous exercise on top of it all, but that’s what you need. That’s what it takes to keep you in health.

When I first went to New York, it nearly knocked me out for a while. I hadn’t been used to doing so much walking. Those New Yorkers really get a lot of exercise and do a lot of walking. They may not get much fresh air, but at least it’s air. It’s better than no air at all.

There comes a time of day that you have just got to drop everything and knock off. You don’t have to have direct sunlight to stay healthy; too much direct sunlight isn’t even good for you. Lots of plants grow healthy and strong just as long as they get daylight. There’s something about the daylight that does it. It doesn’t have to be direct sunlight, as long as it is light.

People hovering over a desk working by electric light, 50 to 60 cycles going off and on that many times a second, they don’t notice the effect on their eyes. But it does affect them, and you are not really getting nice clear daylight that is good for your eyes and good for your skin and good for your soul, working in that kind of light. No matter how good the electric light is, it is not daylight. You’re far better off working with a window and daylight if you can and not with just an electric light, because daylight was made and designed by God for your eyes and it is good for them. Electric light is a substitute which we often have to work by when it’s not daylight.

If you can’t get sunshine, at least you can get daylight, which does something for you. If you can possibly walk where there are woods or trees or grass—plants that God made to give off oxygen in the daytime—you’ll get nice pure fresh air that’s full of oxygen. Of course, if you live in the heart of a stinking city, you don’t have much chance, but even the New Yorkers survive by all that running around they do.

They say bad air is better than no air at all; bad breath is better than no breath at all. Good breath is a whole lot better, and if you get outdoors and get some fresh air and daylight and exercise, you’ll be a lot healthier and stay healthy. But you’ve got to do it every day, every day, every day, and live regularly, and have good diet, good exercise, good hard work, good rest, good elimination, lots of liquids and water, keep the juices flowing, and keep going for God.

Food or Poison?

Doctors have come to the conclusion that too much sweet in the diet is the most common cause of illness among Europeans. When they talk about sweets, they’re not talking about natural sweets like figs, raisins, honey, blackstrap molasses, and raw sugar. They’re talking about refined sugar sweets, desserts, candies, soft drinks, and so on.

They claim that most of the diseases Europeans have can be traced to sugar as the main culprit and fat as the next. I think that’s what the Bible means where it says “lest your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting” (Luke 21:34). They have traced a lot of heart failure and heart trouble back to too much fat and too much sugar. Most diabetics, for example, suffer heart trouble.

Many people wouldn’t think of smoking, but they eat ten times as much poison every day in sugar and sweets as they would imbibe if they smoked all day. White sugar is just almost pure poison!

Sugar is destructive to your body in so many ways. It is not only bad for your teeth in sweet food and drinks, decaying your teeth from the outside. It is even worse in the way it helps to decay your teeth from the inside by robbing your bloodstream of calcium. White refined sugar is almost pure carbon. Carbon has a chemical affinity or attraction for calcium, and the minute this white sugar gets in your blood, it attracts all the calcium that’s near it and unites with the calcium, making the calcium virtually unassimilable.

It robs your blood of the calcium that your body would otherwise normally shoot up to your teeth to try to repair the damage that the sugar’s already done to your teeth from the outside. The sugar robs your blood of that calcium so it can’t repair your teeth. That’s besides all the damage it does to all your other organs. Horrible damage! Damage to the pancreas, it’s hard on the liver, it’s hard on the kidneys, it’s just absolutely bad for you.

So when you ingest any of this white, bleached, poisoned sugar or anything made with it, which is nearly all soft drinks, sweetened juices, desserts, candies and whatnot, what you’re eating is practically pure poison, pure and simple, which does your body absolutely no good whatsoever, only damage.

Any form of natural sweet just as the Lord made it is naturally very good for you in moderation. So if you’re going to have sweets at all, it’s better to use God’s naturally created sweets and not man’s refined, bleached, poisoned, sickening white sugar or things made with white sugar. Of course, you can get too much of any sweet, even if it’s honey or blackstrap molasses or raw sugar. The body can only handle so much, and you’re not supposed to eat too much of anything.

Blackstrap molasses is the next to the last stage in making raw sugar. They squeeze the juice out of the cane or sugar beets and they boil it down until it’s real thick and dark, practically black, syrupy, and that’s pure sugar—that’s just about as pure as it can get. That’s just one stage before the crystallized raw sugar.

Raw sugar has been cooked until virtually all the moisture is gone, all cooked out completely. When you cook anything, no matter what, the more you cook it, the more vitamins and nutrients you kill; some of the things that are supposed to be good for you are cooked out of it. So molasses is the stage just before this extra cooking by which it becomes raw sugar.

In blackstrap molasses they leave just enough of the moisture to make it fluid. But when they make raw sugar they keep on cooking it until almost every bit of moisture is gone. Then after it’s cooked, it crystallizes, and they make the sugar.

Honey is so sweet and the flavor is so strong that you don’t have to use as much honey as you would granulated sugar. There is much more sweetening in one teaspoonful of honey than in a whole heaping teaspoon of sugar. If you’d use as much honey in your coffee as most people use sugar, you wouldn’t be able to drink it; it would be so sweet.

So if you buy a pound jar of honey, it’s like buying two pounds of sugar. And it’s all good for you, healthful, full of vitamins and minerals and things that are very good for your health. Whereas there’s hardly anything good for you in white sugar or brown sugar.

There is a difference between brown sugar and raw sugar. Brown sugar is nothing in the world but white sugar before it’s been bleached with poisonous bleaches. It’s still refined sugar. Brown sugar has been refined just like white sugar, only it hasn’t been bleached. At least it’s a little bit better than white sugar, because it hasn’t got that bleach poison in it. But why use it when you can get natural sweetening? Why use anything else if you can get something that’s good for you?

Eating a great deal of sugar usually drains your body of energy. For example, some people put too much sugar on their cereal and then they’re tired by midmorning, out of energy. Too much sweet of any kind will make you a little drowsy, because, although it does convert into energy, it also has some side effects which are intoxicating.

The little sedative effect of honey will help you sleep if you have a little honey before you go to bed at night in a drink sweetened with honey—but not coffee or tea. Don’t expect to get much sleep out of a cup of coffee or tea at night.

I’ve heard people brag that, “I could drink two or three cups before I go to bed and sleep like a baby!” It isn’t possible. Caffeine stimulates your body whether you’re awake or not. It quickens your pulse rate and your heart beats harder and your brain is stimulated even if it’s in your sleep, so your body and mind don’t rest properly or fully.

So it’s certainly not wise to drink stimulants after dinner or near bedtime, such as coffee or tea or chocolate, if it’s real chocolate. There is twice as much caffeine in a cup of real chocolate, real strong chocolate, as there is in a cup of strong coffee, believe it or not. And there’s usually a lot of sugar too.

They say the next highest dietary cause of diseases is fats. The Scripture says, “Let not your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting,” meaning having too much of anything. It’s hard on your heart and it’s hard on other parts of your body as well. Fats have been a proven cause of all kinds of diseases, particularly heart trouble and arterial sclerosis, hardening of the arteries, along with excess salt. Most vegetable oils are fairly good for you; it’s these animal fats that are not good for you, and are forbidden in the Bible (Leviticus 7:23).

So “you are what you eat,” beloved. Happy health!

Oxygen is one of the most important keys to good health, but not everyone is aware of it.

The Importance of Oxygen
The air we breathe contains oxygen. Oxygen is the spark of life. Just as a fire can’t burn without oxygen our cells can’t produce heat and energy without oxygen. Oxygen is extracted from the air we breathe by the lungs. It passes into the blood vessels that surround the lungs and is carried to all the cells of the body by the blood. Most of the oxygen is carried by the red blood cells, though some of it is carried by the water in the blood. A deficiency of water means reduced oxygen delivery by the blood. So important is oxygen, that even where optimum water, protein, vitamin and mineral intake exists, ill health will still exist if there’s an oxygen deficiency. Under-breathing is epidemic among adults.

The mechanics of breathing determine oxygen supply. Shallow chest breathing gives rise to oxygen deficiencies, as there are very few blood vessels surrounding the upper lobes of the lungs. Most of the blood vessels surround the lower lobes of the lung. Deep, abdominal breathing is the answer to optimum oxygen levels.

The blood is one of the most important substances in the body. The blood sustains the vital activities and it nourishes the body. Therefore, it keeps the function of the tissues, organs and circulation pathway in good order.

When the blood is cleansed, it has oxygen. When it is dirty, it has more waste or carbon dioxide. The condition of the blood will determine the function and the condition of the organs. The heart, the spleen, the lungs, the liver, the skin, the muscles, all depends on the blood.

Most people breathe shallowly. Tight clothing and a lifetime spent rushing, sitting hunched over desks doing paperwork, studying, working computers and getting stressed out produces the bad habits of shallow breathing. Babies don’t chest breathe. Neither do drunks. They’re both so relaxed they breathe easily and deeply and their tummies rise and fall to the rhythm of this breathing.

For a majority of us, common sense dictates that oxygen is one of the most basic, and most important necessities for life. While we all need to eat, drink and sleep in order to survive, it is the simple act of breathing, filling our lungs, and our blood, with oxygen – that, which is most necessary for life.

However, oxygen does more than simply allow us to continue our existence.

Before we get to the benefits of oxygen , let’s look at the increasing problem of oxygen deficiency today and the symptoms of this problem.

Improper Diets
The majority of people eat food that is excessively acidic. Their diet emphasizes red meat, coffee and even sodapop. This causes the development of an acid (less-than-optimally alkaline) constitution with an excess of positively-charged hydrogen ions (H+) in the entire system. When excessive numbers of hydrogen ions are in the tissues, they combine with and use up oxygen. This reduces the amount of oxygen available for the primary function of metabolism. Health problems follow.

An oxygen deficiency plays an important part in cellular contamination. Oxygen is a powerful detoxifier and when its quantity is deficient, toxins begin to devastate bodiiy functions and deplete the body of life-giving energy.

The fact is that in order to be suitable for life – any life; from plants to people, a planet’s atmosphere must have gradually higher densities of oxygen, dependent on the complexity of life supported. Thus, to sustain intelligent and complex life, such as us, an atmosphere requires high levels of oxygen.

Unfortunately, since ancient times, with the growing proliferation of technology in our society, and the decline of natural sources of oxygen such as trees, the increase of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere has been steadily matched by the decrease of oxygen levels.

This means that we aren’t getting enough oxygen – that most important of life’s requirements, from the air we breathe.

Symptoms Of Oxygen Deficiency Disease
It is no coincidence that diseases such as cancer have increased dramatically in the last one hundred-and-fifty years.

Cancer, above all other diseases, has countless secondary causes. But, even for cancer, there is only one prime cause. Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation. All normal body cells are thus obligate aerobes, whereas all cancer cells are partial anaerobes. From the standpoint of the physics and chemistry of life this difference between normal and cancer cells is so great that one can scarcely picture a greater difference. Oxygen gas, the donor of energy in plants and animals is dethroned in the cancer cells and replaced by an energy yielding reaction of the lowest living forms, namely, a fermentation of glucose.

The reason Food Therapies for cancer even exist today (beyond the fact that they work) is because someone once saw the connection between sugar and cancer. There are many food therapies, but not a single one allows many foods high in carbohydrates and not a single one allows sugars, BECAUSE SUGAR FEEDS CANCER.

As discussed by DR. Stephen Levine and Dr. Parris Kidd, oxygen is the source of life and energy to all cells. Body abuse through eating and drinking habits (including pollutants and toxic preservatives in our water and food), air pollution, use of drugs and lack of exercise can greatly reduce the amount of oxygen available to the cells. When there is insufficient oxygen to support the health of a cell, the cell turns to another source of energy called fermentation. This fermentation results in an anaerobic environment, which upsets the metabolism of the cell, and it no longer participates in the healthy functioning of the body. It causes the cells to start manufacturing improper chemicals, and soon a whole group of cells are unhealthy and weak. They lose their natural immune system.

Dr. Parris Kidd has stated that: “Oxygen plays a pivotal role in the functioning of the immune system; ie resistant to disease, bacteria, and viruses.” Dr. Stephen Levine has also stated that “We can look at oxygen deficiency as the single greatest cause of all disease.” Thus the development of a shortage of oxygen in the blood could very well be the starting point for the loss of the immune system and the beginning of the feared health problems such as cancer, leukemia, AIDS, candida, seizures, and nerve deterioration.

The renowned biochemist and Nobel Prize laureate, Dr.Otto Warburg, confirm this research. He stressed the importance of oxygen especially in its connection to cancer. Dr. Warburg summarized by saying, “The prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the normal oxygen respiration of body cells by an anaerobic cell respiration.”

Dr. Freibott explains why oxygen and oxidation is so vital: “It is the lack of oxygen in proper amounts in the system that prevents oxidation and oxygenation, which energized the cells to biological regeneration. These Processes are the foundation of life and death.

“Without oxygen, there can be no nourishment.” Without nourishment, no heat and no energy can be created, and the body cannot purify itself. the unhindered development of this metabolic process results in a circumstance that we call sound health.

Some known medical symptoms of oxygen deficiency are:

  3. Chronic hostility
  4. Circulatory problems
  5. Increased proneness to common infections such as the flu
  6. Fatigue
  7. Dizziness

Oxygen levels are also vital in maintaining the balance of “friendly” bacteria over disease-causing bacteria, and other organisms in the body.
